Commissioned by Qatar Steel Corp, futurist and designer Syd Mead has created the most astounding vision of what the company’s home town of Doha is going to look like in the far future. As Mead interprets it, Doha in the future is going to be a city dominated with towering sculptural skyscrapers with whale shaped airships merrily gliding through the city’s skyline. An interesting bit in the vision comes with the inclusion of five inverted cones topped with parks and even small lakes in the landscape of the city. Now that’s a staggering vision, though I’m a little disappointed by how all of it looks so modernistic and steely and completely devoid of any reminiscence of the classic Arabian architectural sensibilities.
