MIW: Reflecting individual need for diversity
Naresh Chauhan | Mar 16 2009

“My Individual Workstation” is a project that’s clearly inspired; inspired by a desire to fulfill the “the needs of the industrial product design students.” Zeynep Altmisoglu is a student at Istanbul Technical University. While contemplating a next-gen workstation, she started at the most obvious place, her own fraternity! Her MIW (My Individual Workstation) has been designed to provide multiple work surfaces to the industrial product design students. Every aspect of industrial design – research, design and presentation – has been condensed into one MIW. The My Individual Workstation renders itself to multiple uses, be it hardcore drawing or just lounging and relaxing. But of course returning to its raison d’être, the MIW transforms itself into a seat for two – the student and the professor – in a matter of a few steps. With a handy unlocking mechanism the actual seat splits into two, and provides for the central entities to sit across a work surface and interact. Emphasizing that the MIW is a utility in toto, Zeynep has endowed it with Bluetooth technology so that the student can present his project, all from the ease of this wonder chair. Another dimension to the MIW is its mobility – thanks to those large wheels (which by the way are hollow to enable storage of necessities). With those kind of credentials, the My Individual Workstation is anything but a concept. Perhaps one of these days, it will be transported from the drawing board to the classrooms of industrial design students.
