An upshot of collaboration between Josh Finkle, Austin Bales, Russell Singer, Teresa Tan, Jeremy Wolf and Gavin Stewart, this chess set is unique in more than one way. First, everyone in the team was assigned the task of designing a specific piece, as Finkle and Austin Bales designed the “Bishop,” Russell Singer and Teresa Tan the Knight and Jeremy Wolf and Gavin Stewart devised the Rook. Secondly, these pieces are based on the figure and wardrobe of a Catholic bishop, i.e. “the diamond shaped miter hat composed of flat shapes assembled to form a three dimensional volume, the long vertical lines and folds of the robe, the hooded/cloaked figure with its incorporation of and transitions between rounded and angular shapes.” Featuring the center of mass at the base, the static pieces form a larger and rounded volume; while on the other hand, the kinetic pieces form a flat and angular volume owing to their center of mass at shoulder level. The 3D pieces of the experimental chessboard just give a new dimension to the classic game of chess.
