Handy Surfer’s Hilton: Farfetching dreams of waveriders come true
Asmita | Jun 7 2008

Surfing has evolved as a major extreme sport in the past few decades with innovators and enthusiasts pumping in thousands of dollars and countless hours in coming up with technology that can predict and locate the perfect surfing conditions in hotspots across the world. But these destinations are often located in isolated spots with little or no access to proper lodging. To combat the accommodation problems faced by Surf travelers, Graham Martin, a student designer from University of Technology, Sydney, has come up with the world’s first mobile lodging system meant exclusively for surfing enthusiasts and their radical lifestyle.

The Surfer’s Hilton, which has also been nominated for the Australian Design Award, is basically a hard-shelled surfboard travel bag meant especially for use in coastal environments. The design features a dual cell internal space system; first of its kind in the world, that provides reliable surfboard and wet area protection while also doubling up as a spacious and comfortable sleeping shelter. By integrating the functions of travel, sleeping and surfboard carriage into one single unit, the compact unit ideally responds to the surf travelers’ need for minimum luggage and maximum functionality.
