The Australian week celebrations in New York will witness the auctioning of a gem-studded pen created by master jeweler Glenn Curtis and his team during the ‘G’day USA’ week of activities in New York. The profits from the sale of the pen, which costs US
$79,000, will be donated to the Wildlife Warriors Charity, established by Steve
and Terri Irwin in 2002. The pen flaunts its beauty cast in solid gold, set
with diamonds and sapphires. Its design matching the noble cause depicts hand
carvings of endangered species on its barrel along with the words ‘Conservation
in Action’ etched on it.
The cap of the pen houses images
of Australian animals (Kangaroo, Crocodile, Koala, Green turtle) with a cut
champagne diamond set in its base. Its golden grip carved in a crocodile pattern comes to sight when its cap is removed. Curtis Australia product developer Trevor Brown, who designed the pen, said:
There are 450 gems in the pen and there were 8,000 hand movements to set each one of those gems. It’s a lot of work. It’s probably one of the most elaborate pens we’ve ever produced.
This pen, which is a product
of meticulous work by a team of skilled craftspeople who worked on the project
for about three months, will be auctioned on January 22. For its designer, Glenn
Curtis, this was a matter of honor for he has been actively conscious about environmental
causes and has also been involved in campaigns to improve flows in the Snowy River. The pen is really worth purchase both for its
delicate art and for the noble cause it supports.
