Eiffel Tower to receive an extended visitor platform on its 120th anniversary

French firm Sereno Architects has released the first images of its design for the proposed visitor platform extension at the top of the Eiffel Tower. Sereno Architects’ design is one of the entries for the competition held by the tower operator, Société Nouvelle d’exploitation de la Tour Eiffel, to mark the tower’s 120th anniversary celebrations. The proposed extension to the tower comes in a bid to double the visitor capacity at top of the Eiffel Tower so as to get rid of the huge queues of visitors wanting to go up to the top of the tower. A composite of carbon fibre and Kevlar is used by the French design team to double the space without adding too much weight to the existing structure. One important thing worth noticing in the design is that the new platform looks quite alienated from the rest of the tower. I don’t know whether it is done purposely, but this definitely adds a new drama to this vintage structure. The new look of the Eiffel Tower gives out the impression of a gorgeous lady sporting a graceful hat. Check out more images in picture gallery after jump.
