Recycle used water with Harris A’s innovative lavatory fixtures

It’s so nice to see resource-conserving designs like these being created, and this proposal by Harris A at the Reece Design Competition shows every potential of transcending from a concept to being implemented. Being more than ambitious, it is also practical and fully executable. Think about it this way: water from washing hands in the bathroom sink gets drained away all the time, while fresh clean water is being used to flush the toilet. Harris A’s proposal is to let the sink water flow into the toilet’s tank, to be stored for when the toilet needs to be flushed. Later models and designs will probably include diverting runoff from laundry as well. He is not proposing that the entire plumbing be recycled within the house, but that water from a relatively clean usage, be reused to clean a much dirtier system. Although the plan shown here moves the sink behind the toilet, the pipes can easily be bent to retain the traditional position of being beside the toilet. Eco-magination is a relatively new concept (safely assuming its less than a century old), since we only recently realized the need to conserve, but I’m glad to see its catching on, and with more ideas like these, in water conservation and other areas, who knows, we just might save the planet after all.

Excellent idea! I would like to see this one in action.

Usually we work hard to keep our homes as environment friendly as possible. Like switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs, install bamboo floors instead of vinyl flooring and lug groceries home in reusable canvas bags. But most of us draw the line when it comes to our toilets, the idea of getting up close and personal with our waste via a self-contained composting toilet may seem like a bit much. Now because of this invention, people will realize that saving water can be done just as easily like the rest of the things.
