While the existing method for oil rig removal is an explosion that costs millions and kills aquatic life, Texas-based Morris Architects hopes to use the oil rigs to create Dubai-esque luxury hotels. It’s time for the affluent all around the world to take a look at the American Dubai of offshore luxury hotels, which will be made from approximately 4,000 oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico that will be decommissioned within the next century. The award-winning “Oil Rig Resort, Spa, and Aquatic Adventure” design concept by Morris Architects aims to convert the standard Gulf Coast oil rig into a sustainable luxury resort. Morris Architects’ Hotelier At Sea project will use nearly 80 million square feet of space on these rigs to create exclusive resort islands, thereby creating an eco-friendly, luxurious oceanic experience.
The guest rooms will be pre-fabricated and will be transported out to the rig as a standard cargo container. Moreover, each room unfolds and extends to the functional configuration. Transforming discarded oil rigs into luxury hotels for the rich and famous is unquestionably a great idea. More shots of the project after the jump.

Next year we hope to finalize a smaller but quite similar project in the IJ harbour of Amsterdam using a former North sea broadcasting platform to become a great fishrestaurant..
